How to Set Up a TV: Connection Basics Step by Step

Setting up a new television is easier when you follow a clear order. This guide covers the basics that apply to most modern models.

1. Choose a position

Place the TV on a stable stand or wall mount with room for air to flow behind it. Avoid direct sunlight and keep it close to a power outlet and your router if you plan to use a cable.

2. Connect power and inputs

Plug in the power cable first. Then connect devices using HDMI ports, which carry both video and sound. Look for the port labelled ARC or eARC if you want to link a soundbar. Antenna or cable television connects to the RF input.

3. Use the first-time setup

Turn the TV on and insert batteries in the remote. The setup wizard asks for your language, country and network. Select Wi-Fi and enter the password, or plug in an Ethernet cable for a steadier link.

4. Scan channels and update

If you use an antenna or cable, run an automatic channel scan. Then check for a software update in the settings menu, since updates fix bugs and improve app support.

5. Install apps and sign in

Open the app store on your TV and download the apps you need. Many apps display a short code on screen that you enter on another device to link your account.

6. Adjust picture and sound

Choose a picture mode such as Cinema or Standard, and switch off extras like motion smoothing if the image looks unnatural. Test the sound with different sources.

Taking a few minutes to follow these steps prevents most early problems and gives you a reliable base for everything you watch.
